"The MCB is moderate — it has government approval."

Yesterday, David Cameron visited a mosque in Birmingham. According to the Times, he also had a bit of a row with one of its leading members who claimed that the terrorist threat was an invention of the Government to create a police state. There was a "robust discussion" apparently. You have to love diplomatic-speak for raised voices.

The quote of the day came from Dr Nasseem, the elder that David Cameron had an argument with. He said, "The Muslim Council of Britain is moderate — it has government approval." Something which is government approved is, by definition, moderate?

There's a slight problem there on two counts. First there is ample evidence to the contrary in relation to the MCB. Second, thalidomide used to be Government approved. It doesn't make it right.

No, but thalidomide is very useful as long as you don't give it to pregnent women apparently. (Or indeed ones who may concieve at all).

On the MCB issue, the reason why government (I think Michael Howard) started talking to them is that they were prominent. For that read shouting the loudest.

We all know that empty vessels make the loudest noises.

83 year old Naseem stood as a candidate for Respect in the 2005 General Election. He is not part of the solution and we need our senior politicians to be taking on his muddled views. He can't have it both ways. On the one hand the government is like Hitler's Germany yet he uses government "approval" to support his other argument.

If the MCB is moderate, then I'm a Dutchman.
