You can bet the other papers are just as cynical

Interesting post over at LabourHome with an alleged leaked email from Diana Appleyard at the Daily Mail which says,
PUBLICATION: Daily Mail (Request for personal case study)
JOURNALIST: Diana Appleyard (staff)
DEADLINE: 14-February-2008 16:00
QUERY: I am urgently looking for anonymous horror stories of people who have employed Eastern European staff, only for them to steal from them, disappear, or have lied about their resident status. We can pay you £100 for taking part, and I promise it will be anonymous, just a quick phone call. Could you email me asap? Many thanks, Diana
I see Alex Hilton decided to publish her personal email address as well. Now there is an obvious line being taken by Alex on this about the Mail's cynicism, xenophobia etc etc. However, I do wonder whether Alex thinks that other papers don't do similar things looking for anonymous stories about evil racist Tories and the like. After all, cynicism cuts both ways.

The Daily Hate Mail is thoroughly despicable, though. If anything it's worse than the tabloids, because it's taken more seriously. The only right-wing writing worth a fuck in the MSM is the Spectator and anything by Bruce Anderson.

Where have I seen this before? Definitely on some blog, about a year ago...

Racist choose to be so and should be held accountable.

Eastern Europeans should not have to account for their race.

There is a difference

Eastern Europeans are white caucasians, what does this have to do with race?

What caught my eye (as it also did for a commenter on Labour Home) is the combination of "only a quick phone call" and "£100".

That sounds to me like it could well be a recipe for getting people giving you made-up stories?

Given the number of false stories there are around about immigrants, asylum seekers, Eastern Europeans or some combination of the three, I would have thought that rather a lot of care is needed to check facts?

If it cuts both ways then prove it. Or stand accused of yet more twattery. Ah stuffit, you're just a twat when all's said and done.

But I suspect there are more than quite a few stories of this happening anyway

The prejudice that members of one race are intrinsically superior to members of other races. Discriminatory or abusive behaviour towards members of another race, does that help Dozey ?

What's so wrong with a little 'news generation' then? Governments do it, local authorities and quangos do it, so why can't 'news' media do it?

I always belived that at least 60% of what is printed in newspapers is make it up as you go along stuff. Of course its difficult to discern which is truth and which fiction these days, such is the lunacy emanating from these organisations.

Anyway, if the papers do it by themselves that should enable wholesale sackings of 'Press Officers', thereby reducing the net cost to the Exchequer (i.e. us).

Anon @ 12.16: why don't you check your facts before posting vacuous whimsy or utter bollocks? Have you learned how to use Google yet?

Comfy sock, as I told Alex personally and as i said above. The indiginous population of Eastern Europe are not a different race to the indiginous population here. As such labelling it as racism is complete bollocks.

As for the rabbit's comment I can't be arsed with it and may just stop posting his comments at will. Depends if I am on my period or not.

Ethnicity Dizzy! Racism isn't always purely about colour. Bigotry etc can also be ethnic.

Sunny, did you read that back to yourself before you posted it? You start off by saying racism is always about colour, correct, it's about race, then throw out a social construct term ethnicity (from the Greek ethnos meaning nation or tribe) which is not about race either but instead just social grouping of similarity.

Being racist is bigoted, but being bigoted does not necessarily mean you are racist. You've just made my point for me whilst trying to argue against it by conflating ethnicity with race. The two are not the same thing. So no, to slag off, for example, Eastern Europeans is not racist, no more than to slag off Americans is racist. Is it bigoted to do so with a broad brush? Yes, but bigotry and racism are not the same. Although its worth noting of course that sneering at Americans is never called bigotry, much like making sweeping statements about israelis is not bigotry either. Funny that.

Try harder Sunny. A philosophy degree or maybe postgraduate social science degree might help.
