The battle for fifth place as Hain and Blears concede defeat?

When it comes to the Premiership the battle for fifth place, to be the best of rest as it were, is often far more interesting to watch than the battle for the top four spots. This truism applies equally to the Labour Deputy Leadership contest.

Why you may ask is the battle for fifth so important? Well who wants the shame of coming last for a start? But, more importantly, if you're the little Chipmunk who has remained unashamedly Blairite throughout the campaign, coming last will represent not just embarassment for you but also a complete and total indictment of Blair by the wider Labour Party.

And so it is now that Hain and Blears are battling it out to not finish last. The cajoling and horse trading of second preference votes amongst the PLP is apparently well under way with a week to go until the close of the ballot. The trailing dynamic duo of orange skin and orange hair have now tacitly conceded defeat before the votes have even been counted.

The question is which one will turn the brighter shade of red at the end of it all?
