Come on, be fair Dizzy. Were he not using his current office and operating from another office in a building he didn't own, I assume you'd be happy that he claimed that rent. He'd then rent out his current office and pocket the proceeds. All fair and above board. Same difference in my view.
The only complaint that one could make would be that the rent he currently is claiming for the office he owns is in excess of market value. That would be fraud.
Seems fair to me, except HMRC would regard this as income rather than expenses, so as long as he declared it as such... otherwise every self-employed could claim £7000 from their business without tax, and HMRC fine you for attempting that.

The fact is your remarks here and the hysteria of others reminds me of the hysteria whipped up at various time in the past against various minorities.
The fact that this time the minorities are MPS and may indeed deserve little sympathy is not the point.

The reason that Baker is a hypocrite is that he made a wholly false allegation against another (Tory) MP, Dr Julian Lewis – alleging, without a shred of evidence, that he was not living in his constituency home. This was subsequently proved to be false. So whilst using some of his allowance to pay himself to use an office in his house that he already owned, he was wrongly accusing another MP of misusing his expenses. That is unambiguous hypocrisy.
Part of the problem here is taking your "facts" from one source. The Argus is terminally biased against Norman Baker. In any case I don't see how you can call a man a hypocrfite who has spent years trying to uncover these details against the determined eforts of massed ranks of Conservative and Labour MPs.
