No ifs. No buts. Hain should go

Is it just me or is the complete failure of Labour deputy leadership candidates to adhere to electoral law becoming a bit of a farce? The news this evening - broken by Guido - that Peter Hain has failed to register more than just the one donation seriously undermines his position as a minister and member of the Cabinet.

Let's not forget that this is the man in charge at the Department of Work and Pensions. This means he is the man at the top in a department that currently has a major campaign going on about benefit fraud. To claim a 'clerical error' the first time was incredulous, but to then admit a week later that you forgot that you forgot about others when you were remembering about the first makes you look at best incompetent and at worst a corrupt fraudster.

No ifs. No buts. No excuses. Time to go.

He won't; Alexander won't; Harman won't. They just seem to consider themselves above such humdrum little niceties that the rest of us poor benighted souls have to obey - the law!

Guido should have checked with the BBC web site, saved himself all that phoning. Do you usually blog on the strength of a bit by Guido or wait until the proper press report it ?

They are just unbelievable. I bet none of them though that any of this would be scrutinised so just carried on as normal. If it hadn't been for Abrahams none of this other stuff would have come out.

It's shocking.

I totally agree with you, he should go and go quickly. I have written about this and the thing that puzzles me is Brown is this huge student of history and yet he forgets the lesson of the Major years with limpet ministers being dragged kicking and screaming from office!

Hain, Alexander, Harman, Mendelsohn, should all go, just for starters - but we know they have little in the way of honour!
