Last month I did a post about Facebook and the fact that its closed nature good very well be ultimate responsible for its downfall as the primary social networking site. This discussion isn't a particularly new one in the technology world, and Wired have now written about the closed nature of social networking in general.
In essence the agrument is simple, social networks of social networks using open standard is the way forward. The Internet itself has billions of users, locking them into a single system within that network. OK, so the article is a bit techie, but it's well worth a read and isn't that long.

The problem with the article on Wired is not that it is techie but it assumes that all users of the internet are.
As it suggests, you CAN do everything on facebook via a free blog, but why would you bother when on facebook it lets you do everything without any effort. The beauty of facebook is that it is so easy to set up and use that it attracts a massive volume of users and hence your social network is large enough to be interesting.
Personally, I have uploaded videos of my kids onto Youtube and then widely circulated a link. Now I can put the video on facebook and send the link to the few people (e.g. my parents and inlaws) who do not use facebook, but would still enjoy the video. Much easier this way.
Facebook may be a passing fad, and I am sure for most users, much of the intensive interest will peter out, but the functionality is excellent, so will be used for years to come.
