Monday 6th August 2007:"Apparently the Labour Party have issued a drop dead date for completing all its Parliamentary candidate selections by September 23rd. This is the starting day of the Labour conference which could mean we get a "go back to your constituencies and prepare for more Government" type speech from Brown to the newly selected faithful." - Dizzy Thinks
Sunday 12th August 2007:"The Prime Minister has ordered all Labour constituency parties to select their would-be MPs in time for the party conference in only six weeks, in a clear sign that he wants to be in a position to call an election to take advantage of his remarkable surge in popularity since taking over from Tony Blair less than two months ago." - Scotland on Sunday
What can I say? The story is wild speculation anyway.

Last week Labour released the timetable for Burton selection (marginal seat with MP retiring)....hustings scheduled for November 16
if he wants all PPC selected by the conference, maybe he should tell party officials as they're setting timetables with selections after the conference
if they want all candidates in place by October, the NEC should be put in charge of selections or with current timetables they will not finish them by that date as some CLPs don't have a timetable set yet
According to my information, CLPs have been told about this September 23rd deadline.
Labour will be trashed in Scotland if he does go for an early - the SNP are more popular than ever.
I think to finish everything in 6 weeks they need NEC's involvement (they clearly need to change Burton timetable as the current one doesn't fit the 23 Sept deadline).
There were some concernes in left wing CLPs like Nottingham South (where rebel Alan Simpson is retiring) that the central party was delaying their selection (even if the CLP agreed to get an AWS) because in case of an early election the party could have stop a left winger to be selected (if the NEC take charge of shortlisting process as they usually did with late retirements, they will produce the shortlist instead of the local party and so they can get rid of some undesiderable candidates)
