Deciding when to throw your hat into the ring of any significant election contest is always about timing. Throw your hat in too early and you lose the momentum, join the race to late and you just don't get going.
It's interesting therefore that a certain Home Secretary should be giving a lecture to the Young Fabians two weeks before the polls at which Labour expect to be trounced on an undetermined subject. The contents of the lecture will be interesting, will it be on his ministerial brief or instead about surreptitious flying fedoras? Time will only tell!

I still think Reid is the only plausible alternative to Gordon in terms of experience, gravitas etc. But the Blairites know they can only beat Gordon by turning it into a generational contest, and that means Miliband.
