This morning, the Chief Constable of South Yorkshire Police has written to the paper and berated them for it. He said
Sir: You've seen a few seconds of CCTV footage, without context. I've seen all of the film; read the statements; read Ms Comer's signed custody record; read the CPS advice. You see fit to judge the incident ("I'm not racist, but... "). I refer it to the Independent Police Complaints Commission. Lazy journalism. Lazy populist editing. Not worthy of your reputation.Bravo I say, except for maybe the last bit about the papers reputation. The angle they took was absolutely in keeping with their current reputation as a paper that peddles op-ed front pages as news.

Mercer won't, but I hope one of the other victims of this slur (that covered the first 5 pages) sues.
I was talking to a friend who had been reading a book on the gangs of Sheffield that apparently were a big problem at the end of the 1800's and eartly 1900's.
Apparently they recruited lots of lets say burly police men armed them with big sticks are were basically told to beat seven shades of you know what out of the gang members.
Funnily enough the gang violence was pretty much wiped out.
I have thought the covergae of the case in question has been appalling. The 'lady' in question said in one report that she was that drunk she couldnt even remember the incident!
I wrote on that fron cover last week .It was exccedingly cynically put together but shows why Cameron had to act over Mercer
I used to think the Guardian was crap but nowadays the Independent is even worse. I am told it's the only paper they read in the BBC newsrooms. I can believe it.
