Home Secretary confirms she's not a street walker and shows she's out of touch

If a Home Secretary said that the streets were safer after 10 years of her political party governing the country and then went on to say that she wouldn't walk on them at night on her own, you'd have to wonder about the credibility of the first claim don't you?

Well that is exactly what Jacqui Smith told the Sunday Times in an interview she gave. She was asked if she would feel safe walking around Hackney at midnight said,
"Well, no, but I don’t think I’d ever have done. You know, I would never have done that, at any point during my life..... I just don’t think that’s a thing that people do, is it, really?"
What planet is she on to think people don't walk around at midnight? What about people who don't own a car and work in a pub? Does she think they have the ability to fly or something? She even said she wouldn't feel safe walking around in Kensington and Chelsea at midnight.

She really shouldn't be let out alone at any time day or night she just puts her foot in her mouth and falls on her face.

Probably scared of a truncheon in the back down some dark alley way!
But it is a sad sate of affairs after so many years of competent NuLabor rule.

Her real problem is that she is at greater risk from her police bodyguard than she is from a random drunk.

"Just take a short cut through this dark alleyway Minister....oops my trunchon slipped on my pay cut"

what a silly moo.

Ms Smith is out of touch with reality. Is this the government that we deserve?

I'm no fan of Jacqui Smith, but to be fair to her on this one, I didn't feel safe walking round most bits of London at midnight ten years ago.

Indeed, one of the reasons I got out of Lewisham was the fact that you were constantly looking over your shoulder. There was a knife culture there long before the press or the government got interested.

That's not to say things haven't got worse, but the idea that it was safe to walk alone around London at night ever, let alone 10 years ago, is stretching things.

Jackie err, Jaqui, err Jockie, err you know who I mean. Anyway, she's gone up in my estimation since I saw her on the Andrew Marr show this morning.

She started by completely ignoring Marr's questions and reciting a piece about terrorism that had obviously been written for her. (The phrase 'Islamic terrorist' is now banned btw).

She then tried to spin today's news about violent crime by explaining that crime was, in fact, on a downward spiral. Arrests for violent crime have doubled in eight years simply because the police are now so much better than they were under the Tories.

So just remember, if you get shot during a turf war between your neighbourhood gangstas - vote Labour.

I've now promoted the Home Secretary from the Z list to the Y list.

The best part of this story is that after she said all of this, one of her aides frantically wrung up the times to say "But, but, but she bought a kebab in Peckham!"

It's one of those ghastly attempts to not only spin the story, but to spin the notion that yet another minister isn't completely out of touch.

This is right up there with:

Baroness Amos, 'I can't remember the last time I went into a Post Office.'

Hopefully after the next election her and many of her mates will be out of a job out of official limos and police bodyguards and joining the rst of us in the real world. Then maybe they'll see what a f****ing mess they have maden of a once great nation.

Unlike most of you (?) I have strolled around Hackney after dark, and it is more than a little unnerving.

Never mind working in a pub, what if you're just coming home from the pub?
So out of touch, knew she'd be a liability. Not up to the job.

Doesn't everyone have a bodyguard to accompany then to the kebab shop and an armour plated car to get them there and back in?
