Daily Mirror caught trying to infiltrate Tory HQ

Well what can I say about this over at Iain's blog. Apparently, a Daily Mirror hack called Emily Miller tried to infiltrate the Conservative Party and get herself her a job. She was caught out when someone in CCHQ became suspicious and, as Iain notes, "CCHQ did a computer check and discovered that her Hotmail account had been accessed from a Daily Mirror computer".

Oh dear, Hotmail! First mistake! For anyone not knowing, if you're sending an "anonymous email" through Hotmail it dumps a source IP address in the header. As I said the other day, it doesn't tell you everything, but it does leave a paper trail. For any hack thinking of trying this sort of thing in the future I highly recommend GMail which (the last time I looked) shoved a Google IP in the headers so only Google is seen as the source.

I do hope someone at CCHQ raise this with the Press Complaints Commission. Clearly the Mirror's editor is trying to emulate Piers Morgan. Clearly he isn't anyway near as good, because when Morgan got someone into the Palace they didn't get caught.

Update: It's worth noting that the Telegraph got rumbled trying to infiltrate UKIP.

Nice touch of irony from Google Ads, placing a Daily Mirror advert just under your piece...

Thanks for that explanation on the hotmail account. It was the one part of Iain's account that was puzzling me.

Tut, tut.

Although, I think the Telegraph were just trying to see if UKIP were still alive, more than anything else.

And, I have rumbled Iain's dodgy exclusive this morning as I discovered that it had been reported on conservativehome's Tory Diary last night...

I'm not sure what you've rumbled. ToryDiary reported it after Iain did. I'm aware that Chris Paul says "guaranteed reliable" that both of them got it from an early edition of the MoS. How a person stuck in Switzerland managed to get a copy I'm not sure.

Chris suspects a friendly gnome...

Oh good. I can post today. I tried clicking on comments yesterday and nothing happened.

The reason Cameron did not coordinate Redwood's launch with CCHQ is probably because he believes it is leaking to the media.

They already have an Emily or two in there.

The Conservatives won't make much of a fuss about this. Remember why/how Andy Coulson came to be available to take on his new role. As I recall, somthing to do with undercover reporters.

Iain "Mirror in Mole shock" Dale has a mole in the Mail's lawn does he not? Where the Mirror's tanks should be this morning. And no doubt Iain has his Blackberry and is not stuck on the top of the Jungfrau with no connectivity.

Sadly John - both IDD and CH had the story on Saturday evening not on Sunday morning as you suspected fof the former.
