That old unreconstructed lefty Gordon Prentice has been at it again it seems. Over the past few months he has asked questions a few times about Blair resignation honours list, and I posted about one of those questions back in January. This time round he has tabled a motion calling for a scrapping on the resignation honours list to be replaced with a few kind words by the outgoing PM in the House.
The question does arise again though, who will be on the Blair resignation honours list? Lord Alastair Campbell of Burnley?
Isn't it about time for the penny to drop with the party leaders: if they want to start restoring trust in politicians and the system, political honours - or at least honours for party service - should be scrapped. Party interests are all about getting into power and staying there. Service to the national interest should be the only criterion for a gong, and the remit of the scrutiny committee should be widened to allow it to decide whether nominees have met that standard.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous has summarised things quite nicely........
