The John Smith Memorial Trust is an interesting entity. Set up after John Smith died to promote "democracy and good governance" it's a registered charity which has a fellowship scheme "aimed at the next generation of leaders in a number of the independent republics that were previously part of the Soviet Union".All sounds laudable except perhaps for the fact that those taking part in the fellowship scheme at this registered charity appear to be being funded by the British taxpayer. Over the last three years the Department of Constitutional Affairs has provided £912,755 funding for the fellowship programme. How very charitable to use taxpayers money!

If the money is used to do things that government would otherwise pay to do itself, or contract out, then I guess that in principle it's not that bad. However, the value for money in hiring this particular charity would need to be considered.
The Government funds other Trusts' schemes too? Tory governments? Yes? Right.
