Unbelievable! Stealing your bandwidth is bad enough, but threatening you when you move images is beyond the pale.
Did you think about putting "alternative" images where the originals used to be? The internet's full of deeply offensive pics that would ruin this guy's website :-))
He admits he used images he wasn't entitled to, so tell him he will get a counter claim for copy right infringement and for a cut of the profits his small business makes.
I get a lot of unsolicited emails from conceited people in my work. I don't quite believe this one.
The attitude is familiar; but this is expressed too clearly, in English that is too standard. The sense of entitlement and insensitivity to the recipient's interest would usually accompany internal evidence of either a far eastern or Indian writer, or of a recent education in Britain or America in which boosting the child's self-esteem had paid a more prominent role than grammar or spelling.
Who WAS it sent to? I've followed links on this email back to this site to verify it's real, but yours seems to be the original source. Where did you find it?
I think that the term "douche nozzle" applies here.
I cannot get ove what a total twit that guy is. That is one HUGE reason why I do not do customer service. God, save me from the mouth-breathing horde that is the general public
This letter is years old. It's one of those stories that just pops up every now and again.
According to another recounting the author did indeed contact is lawyer, only to find he was the one who could be sued. Later he issues a letter of apology.
In his item descriptions an eBay seller was hotlinking to some images that I had on my server. He was very embarrassed when I replaced them with an image of a couple of scantly clad men in a loving embrace.
put his images back or i will call my lwyers that you have published his email threatening that he will call his lawyers to speak to your lawyers about my lawyers threatening to speak to some lawyers that you decided to removbe the . o i give up
I would have simply replied and said I'd be restoring the images as soon as possible... then look through his site to find the hotlinked URLs and putting goatse (and the like) in place of what he used to hotlink to. I'd save a special large one for a little commentary suggesting that people stay away from a business that threatens legal action when copyright infringement AND bandwidth theft on their part is thwarted.
Y'know, it isn't all that hard to set things up so that if one particular IP views the images, they get one thing, and if any other IP views them, they get something else entirely (pretty much any site which disallows hotlinking does this; that's how you get a "not permitted" graphic instead). It's easy enough to get this fellow's IP address, too, to know which ones to serve the images he likes to. Anyone else ... they get Lemon Party. That would discourage him from leeching the site owner's bandwidth in short order. Let the punishment fit the crime.

What a sad little racist twit you are. You see anonymous, boorish internet behavior, and in your imagination, the hands typing such a rude email simply must be brown.
"How insensitive! The only people who could be that insensitive are filthy, entitled hindoos or ignorant chinamen!"
Get yourself one of those modern educations you decry, and you might look up the word "insensitive."

Instead of keying in on one part of Guy Herbert's comment, you should read the entirety of it.
After your handy ellipsis, Guy goes on to say, "or of a recent education in Britain or America in which boosting the child's self-esteem had paid a more prominent role than grammar or spelling."
In case you missed it, he's not calling out people from the far East or India alone.
We had a situation where another bicycle shop on the east coast was not only stealing images from us, but content (text) as well. Pretty amazing. So what I did was change the image by adding some text to it that made it clear the image was the property of Chain Reaction Bicycles and added something else, don't recall exactly what, that would make it rather embarassing to have that image seen on someone else's site. Took a week or so but they took it down. :-)
Seriously, if someone is stealing images by linking (not by copying and inserting on their own server), you have an amazing opportunity to have some fun!
it's like the guy who i was hosting a site for, he threatened to charge me £1000 a week for illegally using his domain name after he asked me to take the site down but left his domain pointing to my servers! i politely told him i wasn't in charge o his nameservers so he better change them or i will be charging him £1000 a day for illegally using my servers. some people just don't understand the internet at all!
The company I work for has a client that ended up having a parody site put up. This included the use of the original images. We moved them to another location, but before that we put Mr. T. up on each image with a quote bubble saying "I pity the fool who steals my bandwidth"
I manage a number of sites, and while no one has threatened to call a lawyer, I have received a number of derogatory emails after blocking hot linking activity.
OK, now that is funny! Thanks for the laugh this afternoon. I can't believe someone would be that blatant to admit that they stole the images and then to act like they had done nothing wrong. Hilarious!
I could see an artist who repurposes published photos sending this sort of letter to a newspaper or magazine if that publication started removing images from its pages. They'd have nothing to copy from!

Tell him to 'sue or be damned', Dizzy.
He'll have to pay his lawyer for the consultation - at which he'll be told he's an idiot - and the best lessons are financial ones.

Not a message from Nigeria, is it?
Dizzy, you don't say if you've taken up the kind offer to email in ordfer to resolve the matter.
Bugger, didn't see the miniscule hat-tip.
Oh well, I hope Mister Honest Businessman got the lesson anyway.
I'm off to the opticians.
D
No worries, same comment to the others. It wasn't sent to me.
Why didnt he copy them?
Halfwit
The recipient should put some pornos "in place" instead :)
I love moments like this, because they allow even someone like me to feel like a total genius in comparison.
I know it's not noble or anything but dammit, it feels GOOD to have total prats to laugh at, sometimes.
talwin you stole my witty remark right out of my mouth.
Now please restore it or I shall have to contact my lawyers!
Only joshing, I'll have to get up earlier, but well said that young man.
He admits he used images he wasn't entitled to, so tell him he will get a counter claim for copy right infringement and for a cut of the profits his small business makes.
muppett...
He can probably copy them using the Wayback Machine at www.archive.org.
I think I can just make out 'Derek L. Draper' under the obfuscation.

Draper loves his lower case hellos doesn't he?

This is amazing! What I would like to know is, who received this email and how did they respond??
1996 called and it's demanding its old and very worn out meme back.

Still, it's quite comical.
fake fake fake fake fake fake
This is as fake as it is OLD.
In his item descriptions an eBay seller was hotlinking to some images that I had on my server. He was very embarrassed when I replaced them with an image of a couple of scantly clad men in a loving embrace.
it's got to be a wind-up, surely?
LOL in an act of supreme irony, the image Dizzy is showcasing is a screenshot of someone else's email... stolen.
I say return the images for a few days, then replace them with porn using the same file names.
put his images back or i will call my lwyers that you have published his email threatening that he will call his lawyers to speak to your lawyers about my lawyers threatening to speak to some lawyers that you decided to removbe the . o i give up
I like how half the comments are "what a dumbass" and the other half are from dumbasses who think it's addressed to you!

Uhhhhmmmm dude should find out how long he's been using it, do a little math and present him with a bill for bandage.
Honestly this feels like a trollin'
Man sues over images. When he could make his own just as easily.
Lawyer pockets money and laughs.
Man cries in corner while cuddling up to his blanky
Why the heck did they obscure this idiot's name and address and other info. He deserves a few million emails and phone call to educate him.
The recipient should put them back, then replace them with pr0n after the 'user' has confirmed he's returned to using them for advertising.
Hmmm I didn't hotlink to the image anon and I also linked back to the original source.
It's totally fake... you can tell by the pixels.

Hahaha. What a cock-a-doodle-doofus.
This needs to go on Failblog immediately.
Great!
That made my day!
i would like to receive such mails from time to time, tooo ...
what a laugh!!
Holy crap!
Not to state the obvious but if I was running a small business I sure as hell wouldn't be relying on links to advertise my product/service.
What a colossal moron.

It was me. I am the person who got the e-mails.

I bet he's soooo wrong. I bet you soooo what him to call his lawyer about it.
Just to see what he/she would say ;)
Brilliant

This would be one of those situations where I'd sign the guy up on a few dozen of those mailing lists that are impossible to unsubscribe from.
This is an old recycled letter that has been going around for years.
that guy is kidding right? i couldnt possibly take that email seriously.
WOw! I believe this is just a joke, too. This can't be serious mail. If it is real mail, what a airhead guy, I feel sorry for that guy.
OMG, this is a seriously real email? the thief has a louder voice... oops...
OK, now that is funny! Thanks for the laugh this afternoon. I can't believe someone would be that blatant to admit that they stole the images and then to act like they had done nothing wrong. Hilarious!
obvious. its a joke. good one though lol.
It's clearly photoshopped!
(sorry, *someone* had to say this, since there's always a person on every such thread who does so)
I could see an artist who repurposes published photos sending this sort of letter to a newspaper or magazine if that publication started removing images from its pages. They'd have nothing to copy from!
The twist is that moving images breaks legitimate inline image posts as well, like me posting my images from flickr at this site.
