Wild General Election Speculation

So I've been asleep all afternoon (working tonight) and have just woken up having slept through Michael Martin's statement. However, I see he says he's going on June 21st. That's just over four weeks away. Brown is seeing the Queen today as always on Tuesday and then he's going to hold an impromptu press conference at 17.30.

Why hold a press conference when you know that no one will be interested in what you say other than on the subject of the Speaker? Unless of course you have something much more interesting to say (he's already trailed his Labour Party changes and they're party political anyway)? Just wildly speculating is all. Of course, it would be kamikaze electoral suicide, so its a silly idea really.

Update: Please note I posted this simply because if it happened I would be kicking myself if I hadn't.

I suppose Brown is stupid enough to make it look like he called an election because David Cameron asked him to! I still think that is not going to happen, although it would channel a nice £100k to soon to be ex-Speaker Martin.

Can't see it meself - very soon after the euro elections, therefore massive voter fatigue which will hit Labour hard, quite apart from everything else.

However, odds of 34 at betfair made a speculative fiver seem worth my while.

I can't imagine that even Cyclops the Bogie-Man can see any advantage in calling an election when one of his placemen has left in such circumstances.

If he went to the country now they'd be slaughtered, and he would rightly be blamed for bringing his party so low for his own madnesses.

All very true, but I had to write it just in case it happens!

Hari Kiri live on tv? More likely he will stand next to a knife grinder and indicate there's going to be a Long Night.

Must head to the pub to see this announcement. My arm gets tired giving Cyclops the finger each time he appears, but I'll give it another year.

BBC just said that it's his monthly press conference, so not impromptu?

It's his monthly press conference

dizzy said...

Yep, monthly that is normally held in the morning rather than 17.30.

TO be fair the most likely thing he is going to do is gibber on about how tough he's going to be with Labour MPs.

He just wants to be in the limelight and pretend he's all supreme. twat.

Brown is having a press conference because Cameron has once again stolen a march on him over MPs expenses.

Ah well...

I asked myself why that particular date. If nothing else, watch out for it being a good day to bury bad news...

Surely Gordon will announce the General Election on YouTube?
