Quote of the Day

Danny Finkelstein has hit the nail on the proverbial
Robert Mugabe starves his population to death. Nothing. The Janjawid commit genocide in Darfur. Nothing. Gordon Brown bankrupts the country. Nothing. Then someone buys an unnecessary trouser press. Pandemonium.
Funny old Brits huh?

I believe it's known as managing the media. Give them a cosy and cushy lobby plus bar.

What could be easier than simply regurgitating government press releases and claiming to be a journalist?

Rewriting everything the telegraph prints without any analysis or comment.

It's less the Finklestein version and more:

Robert Mugabe starves his population to death. David Miliband says the UN will discuss it. The Janjawid commit genocide in Darfur. David Miliband says the UN will discuss it. Gordon Brown bankrupts the country. Taxpayers recoil in horror, Gordon shifts the blame onto anyone within reach and MSM blindly reports 'Gordon has saved us'. Then someone buys an unnecessary trouser press. The curtain is pulled back to reveal grasping, idle, backstabbing and next to useless shits at the heart of our democracy.

We always suspected this, now we know. The first 3 issues are issues for Government and for Parliament that we have little means to influence. They are also prime examples of what Parliament has done - shovel it's responsibilities to a nebulous external party. The UN serves as both a jolly wheeze, a thinning veil of propriety and as foil for national Governments to get out of discussing hard issues. The BIS and other exalted international finance bodies are a similar foil for national Governments to shift the blame onto.

The 4th is an issue about Government and Parliament and is the only thing we have a direct means to influence. But even then, it's only when they want it.

I quite agree. The general public are as usual pathetic. MPs expenses have been known for ages we are right to be upset angry and concerned, but there are other very serious matters we should be querying.

Not least the future of Vauxhall.

You mean: someone who owns 7 properties in the UK and part of one in France charged the taxpayer £119 for a trouser press. (Source: Garrison Keillor.) Oh, and calls himself a "liberal" and a "democrat".

Sends Joe Public's bullshit detector off the scale.

Yeah, but instead of blaming the public, as Danny does, it is the media he should be pointing the finger at. It's the likes of him who are the problem, not us, whatever he might like to think.
