Thinking about sex doesn't make me sneeze but the sun does

Apparently, thinking about sex can make some people sneeze uncontrollably. I have an admission to make, I suffer from uncontrollable sneezing too, however it's not because of thinking about sex.

I suffer from Autosomal dominant Compelling Helio-Ophthalmic Outburst (ACHOO) syndrome, also known as a photic sneeze reflex. Basically sudden exposure to bright light makes me sneeze. The sun is the worst especially when driving and you come out of say the Blackwall Tunnel and are faced with glaring sunlight.

When I was a kid I used to tell the doctor that I was "allergic" to bright light and that it made me sneeze and he thought I was nuts. This is because it is not commonly known about to people other than those who suffer from it.

Every optician I've ever seen has not heard of it either. I explain it to them and they give me a kind of "bless the loony" smile. Then they start shining bright lights in my eyes and I sneeze three or four time in repetition and they go off and look it up online.

It is quite well known now - something about the wiring in your face being too close. Poor quality conduit if you will.

I have it too. Seems to go down as an endearing quality, somehow.

The medical profession know nothing.

They just think they do.

Maybe I only have a slight touch of it. Bright lights rarely make me sneeze, but if I know that a sneeze is forming, then I can hurry it along by looking at the brightest light around.

Dizzy, I understand that you are mildly dyslectic, but recent postings suggest that you are now also forgetting to use a spell checker. Does this indicate the premature onset of Alzheimer's (just to compound your woes)? I sincerely hope not.

Still, we all have our crosses to bear. I, for example, suffer from AWD (Abnormal Wanking Disorder), usually triggered by thinking about sex. It's my soma, and - insofar as I have managed to keep track of the rapidly diminishing liberties left to us under ZaNuLabour - it appears still to be legal. Spunk on!

"different computer without auto check in firefox :("

Bummer.

So we can safely assume that - dyslexia and photic sneeze reflex issues permitting - regular service will be maintained?

I have that too.

It seemed perfectly normal to me when I was a kid because my dad had it and so did my best mate.

My dad had said it was a natural response and had evolved as a way to force you not to look at the sun, and avoid damaging your eyes.

So I just assumed everybody did it.

Then after I went away to university I found that no one else had even heard of it, and I haven't met a single other person with if for over ten years.

I didn't know it had a name though, so thanks for that.

Funny you should connect sex and sneezing. That explains some things.

Get your girlfriend to trim her muff, James. Problem sorted.

Me too. I put it down to a kind of vestigial vampirism, but haven't been able to identify a corresponding legacy of a transformation-into-a-bat thing.
