Here is an article in today's Independent which notes that the "ban on ugly" fruit and veg is being lifted by the EU and shops could start selling the oddly shaped produce once more.
Here is an article from the Independent in 2004 about "EU myths" which says that there are no bans on things like bendy cucumbers.

"Oddly shapped"? I thought it was the Conservatives who have Grant Shapps...
Anyway, all this reminds me of a Yes, Minister episode that touched on the EU and fruit. This seems to be a case of life imitating art.
hah! fixed
But it is a worry how much fruit has been dumped because it is shaped like well fruit.
Word verification for this comment is asking me to type 'fertato'. Is that a new kind of vegetable?
PS We started regulation of home grown fruit and veg (toms and caulis came first) some 40 years ago, because of too much very poor quality produce in the shops - yes, the EU went somewhat over the top, but for some time now the market polices itself, so high time to back off.
