Kelly to resign before reshuffle

So Ruth Kelly has decided to jump before being pushed in a reshuffle, and Gordon tells Today that there are no political differences between them. It;s the age old, "I want to spend more time with my family" line.

She;s going to lose her seat at the next election probably anyway, but I do wonder, if as is being suggested, she has been disllussioned with the direction of Government for some months, why she is going quietly?

Has she been offered something in the post-politics world so she doesn't cause problems? I know it's cynical of me, but I just can't help myself. Of course, having this resignation now gives Brown an excuse for a reshuffle without it looking like a panic. Backbench rebel leader maybe?

Interesting, though not surprising, that liberal PC commenters are far more willing to buy the 'spend more time with my family' line from a woman with a young family than a man with ditto.

The Beeb has latched onto the Embryology Bill as her source of discomfort. Bit late for that to have such a sudden impact that she has to go only hours after Gordon's great moment, I would have thought.

The press conference announcing this took place at 3am in a Conference hotel. Removing the platform for her to stick the knife in?

Abortion, dear chap. God hates baby murderers. When is that vote?

Ruth Kelly is currently reporting that she was as shocked as everyone else that she is leaving now.

You would have thought that as this leaving thing was her own 'personal decision' she would not have been 'shocked'.

Maybe what she actually would like to have said is that she was shocked at the speed that the ship was sinking, and she had to leave earlier than she originally intended.

Who knows, I guess we will all find out about her inner thoughts soon enough once she serialises her memoirs.

Why is everyone calling this line hackneyed? It's bucking the New Labour trend started by Robin Cook and Tessa Jowell to stand down from their families to spend more time with cabinet.

Why are the papers saying Number 10 leaked the news about Kelly leaving - was it to stop several cabinet ministers resigning at the same time? to defuse a 'plot'?

bizarre...

She's going to get out completely. She doesn't want to fight the next GE - she knows she'll lose her seat.

My guess is that she'll end up doing something related to a charity close her heart - or is it thigh given she is a member of Opus Dei?

Is it just more evidence of the purported "Papist Plot"?

Being slightly serious, it has to be said that apart from those who actively ram it down your throat (Bliar, Brown, Kelly, Khan and many of the NI MPs), I really don't care about the religion or sect that our politicians do or don't espouse.
