I meant to post about this last week but forgot. When reading about the whole Large Hadron Collider business I saw the words,
William Hill celebrated Man's continued existence. It had taken £119 from punters willing to bet that September 10 2008 would see the end of the world.
Why would someone do that? Why?

I suspect the bets were placed by a Downing Street official.
You keep thinking they're incompetent and then they surprise you with more cock ups. Only today we learn they tried to sack a bloke who'd resigned previously.
You forget that William Hill would have fallen into the black hole as well so the punter would have been able to collect (if they hadn't been ripped aprt on the way in).
Better still, as they would have been libving in Switzerland they would pay a very low rate of interest on the investment of their winnings.

If it had been on Betfair, I would have laid the farm on it, so to speak.
Could have been, like, a joke, you know?
As in "lighten up, there are worse things going on."
Boy you humanbeans would have looked silly if we'd collected!
I tried to place an each-way bet but Ladbrokes threw me out...
David Ike?

No-one has ever failed to get rich by underestimating the stupidity of the public.
Why is the person who misses the point, or adds on their own agenda is always called anonymous. I loved it any. Brilliant.
Because they got their dates muddled. The smart money is on 10 November.
Don't we get a few weeks, even if it does happen? First Switzerland disappears (no great loss), then France (hurrah!)....
Plenty of time to collect your winnings and spend them.
After all, you might as well go out with a bang!
