Spin of the Day

Todays utterly meaningless announcement from the Government is that apparently going to make public swimming pools and lidos free to all by 2012. Sounds like a great idea but it's really just a headline grabber which is predicated on the assumption that they will win the next General Election. You can guarantee it has not been costed and that it will disappear quietly.

I wonder will local authorities be expected to fund this policy, i.e. the council tax payers?

As the BBC had to hastily point out, in Wales they are already free for chillun and the elderly.

Oh goody. The money I'll save taking the kids swimming once a week should cover the increase in VED.

Given the rate of pool closures does it need costing?

Agree with the last comment.

Those kind of statements rarely (as in never) tell the whole truth !

More importantly, why in the name of all that's holy should people who don't like swimming subsidize those who do???????

We've got your number.

Anti-Swimmism will not go undetected.
Confess to Anti-Swimmism now and we will go easy on your family ( though drowning is too good for you personally ).

Some pump priming, then local authorities to fund from efficiencies. Good idea though.

I don't think anyone doesn't go swimming because of the price.

Let's face it, it's dead cheap anyway, and already free for certain favoured classes (the usual benefit types).

So the only result will be that those who already use the facilities will not have to pay.

Not much of an achievement really.
