The Best Song Ever Written?

I expect people to disagree. Tough!

I'm sorry to disagree, but you can't beat the line "I was so upset I cried all the way to the chip shop".

I'll bite. The best song ever written was in fact Jokerman.

When it comes to chip shops you can't beat the late Kirsty McCall with "there's a guy who works down the chip shop who says he's Elvis...but he's a liar..."

To bring it up to date a bit, it does kind of work even today as "there's a guy who works in number 10 who says he's the PM..."

I'm with Dizzy though.
For myself there is no best ever, just a top ten depending on mood, but American Pie is definitely in there somewhere, even as murdered by the bloke on the piano in the local wine bar.

Umm, no, I don't disagree actually. Have loved this song since I was a kid and it's one of the very few I never tire of hearing.

As for murdering it in bars, I am that man I'm afraid. I remember going to a New Year's Eve party in a packed pub on the Isle of Dogs about fifteen years ago. It was about 10pm and the event was slowly dying as the young woman doing the entertainment couldn't persuade anyone to sing along, and she wasn't strong/varied enough to carry it on her own.

I didn't like any of the tracks she had, so I belted this one out without accompaniment - as I hoped, everyone sang along with the chorus, and the ice was broken - party took off after that. I should have demanded a cut. Happy days...

Not the best song ever - but what is? I very nice set of interpretations here, though, and well worth watching.

That's spooky, I was singing it in the bath at the same time you were posting this.

What are the chances of that happening eh?

It was up there until it was covered by Madonna. Never did anything in the charts in the States because of its perceived anti-Americanism.

Good to see you are discovering folk music - there aren't many right wing folk songs however.

I wouldn't really call it folk music, and I'm not "discovering" it. I;ve been a muso for much longer than I;ve been interested in politics. I've even seen, and sung along to, The Leveller. Most of the best right wing stuff tends to be punk and ska anyway.

My pickup represents sexual potency? wtf?

Seriously though, everybody knows that "Mannish Boy" by Muddy Waters is the best song ever.
