Chinese hackers? Never!

Now that the hangover has gone, I thought I'd make a quick comment on the Times exclusive this morning about a letter from the head of MI5 to British CEOs saying that the Chinese are trying hack the planet. Is this really news?

I guess that for non-technical types it might come as a surprise, but the phrase "damn Chinese hackers" is almost a cliche in technical circles. Standard joke really. Recently I was asked to look at logs of a political website that had experienced an outage. The Chinese Department of Education was one of the many distributed sources for the attack that it had suffered.

Or does the Chinese govt's own sorry security levels mean that their state systems are slaves to Russian (for e.g.) crooks?

And of course we're not doing the same thing back to them either. Please! Why do we have the likes of the CIA, MI5, MI6 etc?
