It may not be "party-political" but it sure is "political"

Apparently Nicholas Stern, the author of the Government's report on the economic impact of climate change has just been appointed to the House of Lords. He's going to be taking a cross-bench position apparently.

However, please excuse my cynicism, but I find it interesting that the press release feels the need to stress it is a "non party-political appointment". Fair enough, he will take no party whip, but are we really to believe that the appointment has no political dimension?

Members of the House of Lords are politicians as well as legislators. He is being appointed a political job, of course its 'political'.

I think you're being a bit too literal with the definition of political.
