Brown really does want to listen

As I am writing this using my phone you can't have links, but the front page of this morning's Mail on Sunday doesn't make pleasant reading from an information surveillance point of view. Apparently the Government is about to authorise powers to inspect all land and mobile phone records right down to local authority level. How liberal! Now we know what Brown meant when he said he wanted to listen to the British people.

Well in Italy if you get investigated by their tax office they can and will examine mobile phone call logs for your location etc. It won't be long before HMRC have that power if they don't already.

every public body and quango in the country can demand full records from Monday; they can data mine to see who talks to who, and some authorities will be able to access moibile location data as a matter of routine.

Stalin would be proud. So would burma generals.

Think this one will be one of those stories that gets bigger - when people become aware of it.

I'd describe it as a 'lurch to the far left'
