Before the heroin

Sticking with the music theme of the last post, I;ve just seen Channel 4 News run a piece about Amy Winehouse and whether she should be up for the Mercury Music Prize or not because she's a smackhead.

It's worth noting how bloody good the critically acclaimed 2003 album Frank actually was and who she was before she became a household name because she likes to chase the dragon. This is "Fuck me Pumps", and I'm sure we all know the type of girls she's singing about, not to mention the mild irony given what's happened to her.

YouTube is still being slow, give it a chance.
Anyway, I'm not sure whether "Back to Black" will win the Mercury Prize tonight, but comparing this girl to Coldplay (as Nich Starling did last week) is way of the mark musically and lyrically. Shame about the smack

I didn't mean her music was like coldplay. I do make the point though that her music is, in the main, bought by people who are about my age, like the idea of buying CD's still, but don;t really listen to Radio 1 any more and want to but somethings seen as modern, edgy, but ultimately very safe. The people who buy KT Tunstall, Dido, Coldplay and Katie Manure also but Amy Winehouse.

She has a much wider range than that. I know people who wouldn't dream of listening to KT Tunstall, Dido or Coldplay who have bought Amy Winehouse. Her vocie is amazing.

Are you being paid by her agent or something? If you want to listen to a decent female singer-songwriter, go buy an Aimee Mann album.

All this fuss about a few little habits. Very libertarian that is. Ms Winehouse is merely treading the same creaking showbiz boards as many before her. I came across some people who had been in town celebrating the life and times of one jazz musician recently.

Someone who has made it to a very venerable age with such habits - just for fun. The hero of the day wasn't there of course, just doing what they do and absent. But a good time was had by all relaying the stories of when X was doing Y. Whether the smack solo album was better than the cocaine trio or the whisky quartet.

That sort of thing.

Shaun Ryder was surprisingly at the funeral of Tony Wilson rather than vice versa as many would have predicted. Amy is rich and she has a far better chance of "dealing with it" than those who are not rich. We should tax the rich more to pay for fairer recovery from class As for all.
