The Lib Dem MEP, Chris Davies has today written a letter to the Independent in which he calls for Israel to be regarded as a "pariah state" that is fundamnetally "racist". People may remember Davies after he resigned as leader of the Liberal Democrat group in the European Parliament on 4 May 2006 having sent an email to a constituent who questioned his position on Israel which said "Sounds like racism to me. I hope you enjoying wallowing in your own filth." Of course, his letter merely echoes UN Resolution 3379 of 1975 that equated zionism to racism.
Purely for reference, that resolution by the wonderful and glorious United Nations was sponsored by the hugely enlightened and freedom loving nations of Afghanistan, Algeria, Bahrain, Cuba, Dahomey, Egypt, Guinea, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libyan Arab Republic, Mauritania, Morocco, North Yemen, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, South Yemen, Sudan, Syrian Arab Republic, Tunisia, and United Arab Emirates.
It was then carried with a majority by the equally non-corrupt, morally perfect and serious democratic nations of Albania, Bangladesh, Brazil, Bulgaria, Burundi, Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic, Cambodia, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Chad, People's Republic of China, Congo, Cyprus, Czechoslovakia, Equatorial Guinea, Gambia, German Democratic Republic, Grenada, Guinea-Bissau, Guyana, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Iran, Laos, Madagascar, Malaysia, Maldives, Mali, Malta, Mexico, Mongolia, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, Pakistan, Poland, Portugal, Rwanda, So Tom and Principe, Senegal, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Turkey, Uganda, Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.
I wonder if the Ming Campbell, the glorious leader of the Lib Dem will endorse the position that Israel should be treated as a pariah state and that it is fundamnetally racist?

Come on Dizzy. As you're doubtless aware, Chris Davies gets a very hard time from most Lib Dems, myself included, have been more than happy to wash our hands of him (and the odious Tonge). We've got a couple of idiots in office, you've got quite a few too - "Lib Dems say Israel is a 'racist state'" is a rather misleading headline.
you;re right, misplaced "s". Fixed
Careful Dizzy, or the University Lecturers will add you to the boycott list...
The fact that the resolution was sponsored by the states listed does not make the proposition false, logically speaking. *ducks for cover*
Interesting article here about the effects of the 1967 war on Israel and comparisons with appartheid era South Africa.
It's a bit of a hot-button issue this - no doubt you will have to work overtime with the comment moderation!
Yep, agree re: logic. Thankfully I wasn;t making a logical point!
It is...a troubled country.
But then, what country isn't...
From my own personal experience, hatred of the Jews is widespread in the Liberal Democrats.
In the heated exchange of emails which lead to his resignation, Chris Davies also told his constituent that the "Jewish lobby", whatever that is, has too much influence in politics.
Chris is always very careful to talk about the "Israeli lobby" when he's within earshot of the media, but the emails that got him fired show that his gut instinct is to think of Jews and Israelis as one homogenous, evil, anti-Palestinian mass. He won't engage constructively with the broad range of views in Israeli society and in the Jewish community. That's not the position of a man who genuinely wants to work towards peace - it's the view of a very self-indulgent and short-sighted politician who cares mostly about venting his spleen, rather than helping the situation in the middle east.
Sorry for the rant Dizzy; I needed to get that off my chest!
