This time for ladders. Yes that's right, the evil and pervasive pinnacle of the downfall of society is at last being tackled. The Health and Safety Executive has decided that its going to promote "ladder safety" by introducing a "ladder exchange" so that they can remove 4000 dodgy ladders from Great Britain. Where they got the 4000 figure from God only knows.
Apparently we must all be very careful with ladders, and when we use them we should ask ourselves, "do I need a ladder or should I use something different?" A good question, why use a ladder when a wobbly chair or a few boxes piled on top of each other will do. Alternatively climb, if in doubt, use a snake.

Next there'll be stop-and-search for ladders at the tube stations.
A neighbour needed new guttering. She is the Health and safety person in her workplace.
Instead of letting a jobbing builder use a ladder, she hired in a team of scaffolders to do the work, complete with all the hazard boards and signs.
What should have been an afternoon's work and a few quid for cash, took two weeks and must have cost a fortune.
step & search ?
I heard of a chap using a ladder to replace a lighting tube to use a tower scaffold as he was not safety trained on a ladder..... apparently 30 years as a retained fireman didn't count.
Hey, don't laugh. Ladders are dangerous.
But then so are cars, diesel fuel, windows made of glass, getting out of bed, crossing the road, school food, the height of bumpers (Amer. fenders?) on trucks relative to those of cars and to peoples knees. Airbags are dangerous, too. Unless you are a adult.
Suitcases are dangerous if you have a back. Not a bad one, mind, just a back.
But don't get me started on africanised bees. All this is stressful and so I might just end it all. But that would involve something dangerous.
"step & search"
Very fishy.
