My favourite people at the Health and Safety Executive have launched a new campaign today all about falls from heights (as opposed to "falls from lows" presumably). They've produced a number of instruction manuals on how to use ladders, and even step ladders.
In fact, I nearly wet myself with excitement when I discovered that they had even produced a "handy pocket size" book called "Top tips for ladder and stepladder safety" which you can download as a pdf.
It includes things I'd never even considered. Apparently, you should "Always grip the ladder when climbing". I've always done it no-handed using just the Force whilst wearing my slippers.
Anyway, if you want more than 25 copies of this estimable publication the HSE will flog you some if you like (ISBN 071766127X - yes really.. it has an ISBN number)

I heard of a worker who was told not to replace a light bulb from a ladder but to get a tower scaffold, the worker has done 30years as a retained fireman.
Dizzy you are naughty!
That said in some professions they do climb ladders no handed, you can with practice, and do so safely.
You can't without practice though.
But is there a warning on the cover telling us not to read the book whilst climbing a ladder??? Is it printed in a factory where the workers eat peanuts? How much salt does it contain and could a small child choke on it? Will we be fined if we smoke the book in a public place. Is it an offence to beat a fox to death with this tome? Will I be awarded a knighthood for smacking that smug anally retentive Hazel Blears around the back of the head with this publucation? I think we should be told.
