Blunkett's "policy" pamphlet

Yesterday, David Blunkett released his first "policy" document since his second resignation published by the Resolution Foundation. For the non-anorak types who wouldn't dream of reading such a thing I've done it for you. Here are the highlights:
  • Prior to 1997 there was a culture of dependency engendered by the British welfare system. The introduction of tax credits which made people earning up to £60K reliant on the state for benefits has created "substantial progress" in moving away from dependency.
  • The breakdown of a television is a "crisis" increasing the need to borrow to "see people through". This is particularly a problem for the poor.
  • The solution to social mobility for those on state benefit is to encourage them to get in cheap debt.
  • We should let tenants purchase stakes in their council houses over time (sound familiar?)
  • Inheritance tax should be reformed (original huh?)

If a TV breakdown is 'a crisis', what does that make a death, a car crash or a divorce?
