Cherie Blair wrong, Alastair Campbell right?

This morning started out so well. My copy of The Little Red Book arrived last night so I cheerfully read it on the way to the bus. I picked up my Telegraph from the shop got on the bus and began to indulge myself in the news of the day at which point anger set it.

Happily the Cherie Blair/Hutton Report story was getting coverage. The Telegraph mentioned that Alastair Campbell's partner Fiona Millar had been on Sky News and called for Cherie Blair to apologise as well. She had conceded that it was not an approriate thing to do and that "the right thing to do is to apologise"

Now correct me if I'm wrong here but wasn't her boyfriend at the auction and didn't he autograph the fucking thing too? Is she saying that is appropriate?

I watched it. Didn't realise that awful woman was the partner of Campbell. Silly cow.

I guess she's banking on the story being about Cherie more than Campbell.

Dizzy,

Forgive me for saying this, but I think you are mis-translating Miss Millar's meaning here.

You think she's responding to the outcry over Cherry's complete lack of sensitivity. Personally I think our fiona's commenting on Mrs Blair's unforgivable breach of literary etiquette.

In the book trade, I understand, it is perfectly acceptable for the author of a piece of fiction to sign a copy of his work for a fan. It is, however, unforgivable for someone else to do so; hinting as it does at plagarism or even fraud.

If one does interpret Miss Millar's comments in this fashion one can understand precisely why she does not call on her paramour to issue an apology; she believes him to be the injured party.

I'm not sure what to make of your reply. Was it meant as a joke or were you being serious?

Well Campbell did write it.... :) Well said!

"..she believes him to be the injured party."

So, the truth is out, Campbell did write the report.

Dizzy,

My apologies for any confusion. I was grinning inanely when I wrote that comment if that is any guide to its seriouslness.

Still, says a lot for my literary skills; maybe I should take up on-line poker.

Why is "sorry" such a hard word? I hope David Cameron and the Conservatives would be big enough to say it as and when the moment came.

Can you remind me what David Kelly's family have said about this? I'm just wondering if prolonging this afer we have made our point is causing them extra distress.

To be honest Ellee, I'm not sure what they've said - if anything.
