Brown's housing boom and bust illustrated in tax receipts

Gordon Brown infamously said in 1997, "I will not allow house prices to get out of control". The strange thing is, he didn't even need to look at the market, he just needed to look at the stamp duty tax receipts to see what was happening.

  1. These matters are for little people to worry about, not World Statesmen, like as wot I is.

  2. Iain Dale has posted an item referring to a Youtube post of Brown clutching his knees, and he wonders why. I have referred him to the old song:

There came a girl from France
Who didn't know how to dance
The only thing that she could do
    Was knees up Mother Brown

    Refrain:
    Oh, knees up Mother Brown
    Knees up Mother Brown
Knees up, knees up, never let the breeze up,
    Knees up Mother Brown

    Oh, hopping on one foot
    Hopping on one foot
    Hopping, hopping, never stopping
    Hopping on one foot

    Refrain.

    Oh, prancing up and down
    Prancing up and down
    Prancing, prancing, never dancing
    Prancing up and down

    Refrain.

    And whirling round and round
    Whirling round and round
    Whirling, whirling, never twirling
    Whirling round and round

    Refrain.
    Refrain.
